New name coming for Sharks arena?

HP Pavilion

In news that’s not very exciting whatsoever, the San Jose Sharks’ arena may have a new name soon.

While most fans know it as the Shark Tank, its official name is the HP Pavilion (formerly the Compaq Center).

But as reported by the tech blog AllThingsD, Hewlett-Packard wants out of the 15-year, $47 million naming rights agreement, even though the deal isn’t scheduled to end until 2016.

From AllThingsD:

The move is part of a global reevaluation by HP of its marketing efforts and sponsorships. The change could be announced as early as this summer, in time for the 2013-14 hockey season.

Software giant SAP is said to be interested in taking over the naming rights. Its founder, former co-CEO and chairman of its supervisory board, Hasso Plattner, is the majority owner of the Sharks.

So yeah...we told you it wasn’t very exciting.

Not nearly as exciting as the way they make the ice pulse before Sharks games.
