Trade: Caps acquire AHL defenseman from Minnesota

ChayGenoway

The Washington Capitals and Minnesota Wild pulled a minor deal on Thursday -- the Caps acquired AHL defenseman Chay Genoway in exchange for a conditional 7th round pick in 2014.

Genoway, 26, is a former University of North Dakota standout that signed with Minny as an undrafted free agent in 2011.

He’s appeared in one NHL game -- a 4-1 loss to Phoenix last season, in which he assisted on the Wild’s lone goal -- and has spent all of this season with AHL Houston, racking up 4G-15A-19PTS in 53 games.

Here’s Mike Russo of the Minnesota Star-Tribune to explain what the deal means for the Wild:

Genoway trade, #aeros had 10 D + Fletcher trying to free contract space for trade deadline/signing college free agents. 2 spots now #mnwild

Washington does need defensemen at the moment -- John Erskine, Mike Green and Jack Hillen are all currently on injured reserve and Tom Poti has been in and out of the lineup all season long.
