The Philadelphia Flyers are reportedly close to signing defenseman Kimmo Timonen to a contract extension, and an announcement is expected this week, writes Tim Panaccio of CSN Philadelphia.

Timonen is in the final year of a six-year, $38-million contract.

“We have had talks but nothing is in place,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren told CSNPhilly.com.

Timonen, a 10th-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, turns 38 years of age in March.

He began his NHL career with the Nashville Predators, but has spent the past six seasons with the Flyers.

Last season, in 76 games, Timonen scored four times and put up 43 points. Since making his NHL debut with Nashville during the 1998-99 season, he has consistently hit the 40-point plateau and reached the 50-point mark twice during his last years with the Predators.

If there is one area of concern, it is that Timonen is coming off back surgery during the off-season.
