Alex Ovechkin finally hit the two-goal plateau - seven games into the season - but the Washington Capitals still couldn’t outscore the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Capitals now have one win in their seven games, after a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Nikolai Kulemin and Matt Frattin scored two minutes and 13 seconds apart in the third period to give Toronto its first win of the season at the Air Canada Centre.
Ovechkin’s struggles have garnered plenty of attention in hockey circles.
However, another right-handed shooting winger is going through an even worse scoring drought.
Phil Kessel, 25, has yet to score since the end of the lockout, but was a factor tonight against the lowly Capitals, wrote Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post.
Interestingly, Kessel and Ovechkin were both key figures in the 2011 NHL All-Star Game draft. Infamously, Kessel was the last overall pick, and who could forget the tape of Ovechkin smiling and taking a photo of Kessel with his camera phone?
The pundits on Twitter have taken notice of Kessel’s slump. And Ovechkin’s for that matter.
The Leafs and Capitals have produced two goals so far tonight. Neither was scored by Phil Kessel or Alex Ovechkin though. Just saying.
