Decimated defense: Detroit to sign Huskins

Kent Huskins

With injuries piling up on the blue line, the Detroit Red Wings will sign veteran defenseman Kent Huskins today, reports TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

Huskins has played 299 career NHL games with Anaheim, San Jose, and St. Louis.

In 2011-12, the 33-year-old appeared in just 25 games for the Blues, missing the majority of the season with a fractured ankle.

But the Wings are beggars that can’t be choosers. Last night in Columbus, they lost defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo to an injured shoulder in a game they were already playing without Jonathan Ericsson, who reportedly hurt his shoulder in practice this weekend.

When asked when Colaiacovo might return, head coach Mike Babacock said “it doesn’t look like it’s any time soon.”

Ericsson will get an MRI today, per McKenzie.

The Wings have also been without defenseman Jakub Kindl (groin), though he could be back Friday.
