Buffalo’s Sekera inks with KHL club

Another Buffalo Sabre found work in Europe on Thursday as various outlets reported defenseman Andrej Sekera has agreed to terms with KHL team Slovan Bratislava.

UPDATE: It’s now on the Bratislava website. Thanks Philip!

Slovan, based out of Slovakia, is a new entry in the Russian elite league after winning the Slovak Extraliga in 2011-12. The team features a number of ex-NHLers including Josef Boumedienne, Mario Bliznak, Peter Olvecky and, perhaps most famously, former Sabre Miroslav Satan.

The move represents a homecoming of sorts for Sekera. Prior to joining OHL Owen Sound in 2004, he represented HK Dukla Trencin of the Slovak league at both the junior and senior levels.

A solid puck-moving defenseman with some skill, Sekera has spent his entire six-year NHL career with the Sabres and, in 2011, signed a four-year, $11 million extension with the club.

(Which includes a $1.75 million signing bonus for this season, which he’ll be paid in full.)

Sekera’s best year in Buffalo came during the 2010-11 campaign, when he scored 3G-26A-29PTS and finished third on the team in average time on ice, with over 21 minutes per game.
