Yzerman keeping busy during the lockout

Steve Yzerman 2

When an NHL general manager can’t sign players, trade players or even talk to players, he has to find ways to make himself useful.

For Lightning GM Steve Yzerman, that means scouting players.

“Tomorrow our American League camp starts up,” Yzerman told ESPN.com Wednesday when asked about his lockout plans. “I’ll head to Syracuse tomorrow, and I’ll continue to follow them. I’ll also watch our prospects in junior hockey, once college starts up, watch our prospects there, and then try and catch the top kids for the draft and get more involved there.”

So look out, Dylan Blujus of the Brampton Battalion, your future boss may be watching on any given night.

We suppose general managers might as well take advantage of the time that’s freed up by the NHL’s work stoppage.

Though by November or December, when he gets tired of hanging out in AHL rinks and traveling to small towns to watch teenagers play, we bet Yzerman’s back in Tampa Bay just pretending to look busy.
