Caps extend Brouwer: three years, $11 million

Troy Brouwer

Days before the CBA is set to expire, the Washington Capitals have signed winger Troy Brouwer to a three-year, $11 million contract extension.

“Troy is a physical and versatile power forward who can play both wings and who has averaged close to 20 goals in the past three seasons,” said Caps GM George McPhee in a release. “He is a Stanley Cup winner and a great leader. We are thrilled that he will continue his career in Washington for many years to come.”

Brouwer’s cap hit under the current CBA will be $3.67 million when his contract kicks in for the 2013-14 season. His cap hit for 2012-13 is $2.35 million, so the 27-year-old is getting himself a nice raise after an 18-goal campaign in which he led Washington with 247 hits.

Brouwer won a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010 before he was traded to the Caps the following summer.
