While NHL teams are shifting more and more toward defense-first approaches, Peter Laviolette continues to promote his attacking system.

His contract was scheduled to expire at the end of next season, but CSNPhilly.com’s Sarah Baicker reports that the Philadelphia Flyers expect to extend his contract “within a week.”

Laviolette coached the Flyers to an appearance in the 2010 Stanley Cup finals after taking over for John Stevens and also won an Atlantic Division title during his three abbreviated seasons in Philly. His overall record as the Flyers coach is 122-73-26 in that span.
