Washington Capitals GM George McPhee continued to round out his coaching staff on Monday, announcing longtime NHL assistant Tim Hunter would be joining the staff.
He’ll work alongside fellow assistant Calle Johansson under new bench boss Adam Oates — reuniting a trio that was instrumental in leading the Caps to the 1998 Stanley Cup finals.
(Hunter was an assistant to head coach Ron Wilson that year; Oates and Johansson were second and third on the team in scoring.)
The 51-year-old has been an assistant coach for 13 seasons with the Caps, Sharks and Leafs. As a player, he won a Stanley Cup in 1989 when he was a member of the Calgary Flames.
