The Winnipeg Free Press is reporting that the Jets and winger Evander Kane are working on a new contract that could run as long as six years.

Kane, 20, led the Jets with 30 goals in 2011-12, and according to the report, his deal will closely mirror those of John Tavares (six years, $33 million) and Phil Kessel (five years, $27 million.)

Kane’s coming off a tumultuous season in Winnipeg. In January, he was called out by his coach, Claude Noel. Soon after that, there were accusations he skipped out on a restaurant bill.

There was also a rumor last month that he didn’t want to negotiate with the Jets, though apparently that’s not the case.
