Gerard “Don’t call me Turkey” Gallant joins Habs as assistant coach

Gerard Gallant

It’s official, Gerard Gallant has joined the Montreal Canadiens as an assistant coach under new bench boss Michel Therrien.

Gallant is the 78th (or something like that) offseason hiring in Montreal. The 48-year-old former NHLer with Detroit and Tampa Bay has been the head coach of Saint John in the QMJHL since 2009. Under his guidance, the Sea Dogs went a ridiculous 161-34-9 and won the Memorial Cup in 2011.

Gallant was the head coach of the Blue Jackets from 2005 until November 2006, and according to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch, he has two nicknames – Spuds and Turkey, the latter of which he does not care for.
