What they’re saying about Game 3 of 2012 Stanley Cup finals

In the first two games, the Los Angeles Kings largely seemed like the better team in the 2012 Stanley Cup finals, but not by a huge margin. The New Jersey Devils buckled a bit more in Game 3, however, especially as the Kings broke it open late to win 4-0. Let’s gauge what people are saying about it on Twitter. (Check out the Game 1 and Game 2 bits here.)

“Embarrassing” power play - or great PK?

We’ll get deeper into this in a future post, but one of the growing debates is sort of a nature vs. nurture/chicken-and-the-egg argument. Is the Devils’ PP that bad or are the Kings just that stingy on the PK? Mark Spector points out the Kings’ ridiculous recent PK work while James Mirtle might have penned the best line about New Jersey’s man disadvantage.

“Devils might need a few 5-on-2’s in this series.”

Ouch.

Doom and gloom

People haven’t been hesitant to crown the Kings (sorry) even earlier in this series, but once it seemed clear that Los Angeles might win, the sarcastic obits really started pouring in. Mirtle said the Devils “are dead” after they fell behind 2-0. Meanwhile, one Devils blogger brought up memories of Ryane Clowe.

“Something the Devils haven’t tried yet: playing the puck from the bench. That’s the only way to beat the Kings, perhaps.”

Pretty hard to believe the San Jose Sharks kinda manhandled the Kings to finish the regular season, eh? (Some cruel folks might say that’s symbolic of both franchises’ fates. Mean.)

More whimsy

Steve Lepore and others made inevitable jokes about how much Jeff Carter and Mike Richards might party during the potential Stanley Cup celebrations. That wasn’t the only bit of humor to come from that game, however, as Erik Erlendsson presented a cheesy Jonathan Quick pun headline but Kings mascot Bailey stole the show with a “Jersey Shore” gag that seems right out of the Green Men handbook.

Question: is Peter DeBoer mad, just watching a replay or trying not to laugh? Maybe some combination of the three?

Confusion

Hardcore Kings fans must feel a strange combination of jubilation and bewilderment right now. The franchise has been kicking since 1967 and even the Gretzky-era converts have suffered through a lot. Kings blogger Rudy Kelly wonders what he’s supposed to do, exactly, while Al Michaels tackled it in this interview.
