Martin Brodeur has talked about the possibility of retirement a fair amount over the course of the season and the New Jersey Devils’ playoff run. Now, as New Jersey gets ready for the Stanley Cup finals, Brodeur still isn’t sure what he’ll do if they win, although he seems to be leaning heavily towards playing in 2012-13.

“I can’t say no, but I doubt it,” Brodeur said of the possibility of retiring if the Devils win the Stanley Cup. “I’m really enjoying this. Regardless of what happens in this series, I think we made a great step last year at the end of the year and through this year to have a really good team and a good coaching staff together and it’s fun. To me, it’s all about having fun coming to the rink.”

The idea of ending a career with the raising of the Stanley Cup is an appealing one from the outside looking in, but that’s not Brodeur’s only consideration.

“I know a lot of people say it’s great to retire on top, but at the end of the day, when I’m going to say it’s over, it’s over, I’m not going to come back,” Brodeur said.

Of course, we could name a few star players that attempted to stage a comeback after retiring - some successfully. Perhaps thinking about that, Brodeur added, “Hopefully, we won’t have to replay that tape (laughing). I want to make sure I make the right decision. Right now I’m leaning toward coming back. We’ll see.”

His more immediate concern is getting ready for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals, which will also be his 200th career postseason contest.
