Report: Flyers aren’t out of the mix for Rick Nash

Rick Nash

Although nothing serious has developed yet, the Philadelphia Flyers are reportedly still discussing the possibility of a Rick Nash trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The New York Rangers and San Jose Sharks have also been linked to Nash recently. In addition, there’s a chance that the Vancouver Canucks might enter the Nash sweepstakes now that they have freed up some cap space by putting Keith Ballard on the long-term injured reserve list.

In Philadelphia’s case, they certainly have the pieces in place to present the Blue Jackets with a very compelling package, but they might be reluctant to meet Columbus’ demands. When Philadelphia was initially linked to Nash, it didn’t make a ton of sense from the Flyers perspective, given that a scoring winger wasn’t high on their list of needs. There are still some compelling reasons why Philadelphia might not be the best fit for Nash. For example, they might find it difficult in the long run to integrate Nash’s $7.8 million annual cap hit. However, they have already satisfied one of their more urgent priorities by acquiring defensemen Pavel Kubina and Nicklas Grossman last week, so perhaps they’re now broadening their horizons.
