Lost amidst Mike Cammalleri calling the team a bunch of losers (or something like that) was news that Montreal captain Brian Gionta underwent surgery for a torn bicep yesterday, and may be out for the remainder of the season.
Gionta, who just returned to the lineup on Saturday after an 11-game absence, suffered the injury late in Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to St. Louis. Interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth said Gionta only played a single shift after hurting his bicep in which he made a rush up the ice, skated to the bench then took off down the dressing room tunnel (though not before chucking his stick in frustration.)
It’s been a forgettable year for the 32-year-old veteran. Plagued by injury, Gionta’s only seen action in 31 contests, (recording 8G-7A-15PTS) and been unable to stem the tide on a disastrous season.
