Video: Cal Clutterbuck punches linesman in the face

Clutterbuck

Ugly scene in Minnesota tonight at the tail end of the Wild’s 5-1 win over Vancouver. After getting into a skirmish with Canucks agitator Maxim Lapierre, Minnesota’s Cal Clutterbuck took a swing...and missed his intended target:

Whoops.

The linesman on the receiving end was No. 66, Darren Gibbs, a 14-year NHL veteran that’s called over 800 regular season games.

Clutterbuck drew a 10-minute misconduct and declined to comment after the game. He told the Minnesota Star-Tribune’s Mike Russo he was too worked up to say anything but did ask “what could I do?” His coach, Mike Yeo, said Clutterbuck was “just trying to protect himself” and didn’t express concern about discipline from the NHL. (Russo tweet: “Yeo said video shows not only does Lapierre try to lift Clutterbuck into bench, one Canuck is trying to pull him in bench.”)

Further discipline seems unlikely given the punch looked accidental, but we’ll take a wait-and-see approach until tomorrow. No league is overly thrilled when one of its officials gets punched in the grill.
