Kings strike back, shutout San Jose 4-0 to tie series at 1-1

Drew Doughty

After the valiant fight the Kings put up before losing to San Jose in overtime of Game 1, the Sharks were served notice that this series wasn’t going to be easy. Without Anze Kopitar, the Kings were still able to keep up with the Sharks and tonight their defense stepped up to make up for their shorthanded offense in a big way. Drew Doughty had two goals and two assists to lead the Kings to a 4-0 win to tie the series up at 1-1.

Doughty’s monster game helped make up for the loss of Kopitar and the struggles of the rest of the forwards in a big way. Doughty also assisted on Jack Johnson’s goal in the first period and Kyle Clifford’s goal in the third as the Kings got a monster game out of Jon Quick. Quick saved 34 shots to earn his first playoff shutout and gave the Kings a win they can now use on the way back home to Los Angeles to gain momentum heading into Game 3.

For San Jose it’s a disturbing loss not just because it came at home but also because it came on the heels of a huge win in Game 1 and against a team that had been struggling to score goals for most of the season. Getting shutout and outscored as badly as they did is a red flag of sorts. The Sharks took bad penalties in the first period that led to two power play goals. By that point, they’re already in a hole and with no room for error. Getting down two goals at anytime in the postseason is asking for a lot of trouble but against a more defensive-minded Kings team it’s virtual doom.

With the series heading back to L.A., the Sharks have some questions to answer for themselves, mainly about where in the world their best players are at. Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton have struggled in both games of this series and while people have been more than critical of them in past playoff series, the talk about them will pick up once again as they haven’t shown up yet in this series.

Here are the highlights from how the Kings put the boots to the Sharks and show off Drew Doughty and Jon Quick’s big nights.
