The up-and-down defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks received some good news today, as head coach Joel Quenneville was released from the hospital. He had been admitted to an emergency room after suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding related to a small ulcer.
Team physician Michael Terry said that doctors will continue to monitor his progress and that they expect him to fully recover. He did not say when Quenneville will be available to the team again.
Quenneville has already been sidelined for two games (a win against the Wild on Wednesday and a loss to the Blue Jackets on Friday) and it’s unclear if he’ll be behind the bench for Sunday afternoon’s nationally televised contest against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Assistant coach Mike Haviland is currently filling in for the coach.
It’s probably an understatement to say that the highs and lows of a grueling playoff run might not be the kind of stress-free environment conducive to someone dealing with an ulcer, but it’ll probably be difficult for Coach Q to watch the games without helping his team. We’ll keep you informed about his recovery process.
