In a win that parallels the Cleveland Cavaliers ending their NBA-record losing streak by beating the historically bad Los Angeles Clippers, the Ottawa Senators broke their 11-game losing streak with their win against the Edmonton Oilers 5-3.
Beyond breaking the Senators’ lengthy slump, the game served as an “audition” of sorts for some possible trade targets on both sides. If that’s the case, three players made the best impressions: Alex Kovalev, Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner.
Kovalev scored two goals and an assist, Penner scored two goals and Hemsky provided two primary assists in the game.
Brian Elliott only needed to make 15 saves to break his personal 13-game losing streak, earning his 13th win of the season. Nikolai Khabibulin made 20 out of 24 saves in the loss.
The Senators distanced themselves from the Oilers to avoid being the lowest ranked team in the NHL, as Ottawa now has 44 standings points while Edmonton is stuck at 40.
