Report: Bruins will shut down Marc Savard for remainder of season

When Bruins center Marc Savard was knocked out of the game two weeks ago against Colorado with what ended up being another concussion, many fans and people around the league hoped that the right steps would be taken so Savard can get well again. Some hoped for Savard to sit out the rest of the season while some others even went so far as to say he should hang up the skates for good for his own well being.

Reports are occasionally wrong but in the case of Marc Savard, you have to believe it’s nothing but the truth. Joe Haggerty of CSN-New England reports that Savard will be shut down for the rest of the season. Haggerty dishes the details for us.

The B’s are expected to make the announcement on Monday amid a team practice at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington, and it’s a much-expected development after Savard suffered his second concussion in less than a calendar year after a Matt Hunwick caused him to go face-first into the board and glass.

Savard is still experiencing headaches, irritability and dizziness as a result of his latest concussion two weeks later, and appears to be suffering from the same post-concussion syndrome symptoms that hampered him last season and again this summer.

After seeing the troubles Savard went through after his concussion thanks to Matt Cooke’s vile hit last season and now hearing about him having similar troubles again this time, we hope nothing but the best for Savard to just make his life better, never mind his career at this point. It’s not the kind of attention Savard hoped to be drawing when he became a Bruins super star, but for now he’s turning out to be the poster boy for what can go wrong when dealing with concussion issues.

Shutting down Savard for the season is the right move for the Bruins and the team will have to soldier on without him. This means that they’ll need Patrice Bergeron to have his great season to continue on and hope that David Krejci and Tyler Seguin can emerge from season-long offensive slumbers. It’s possible the Bruins will also start sniffing around at the trade deadline for help either at center or on the wing, but the team has some defensive questions to get squared away first.

For now, you just have to hope that Marc Savard can get the help he needs to get himself well before we can even think about getting him back on the ice.
