Toronto’s “Waffle Man” says he’s not done serving the Leafs breakfast

MapleWaffle

Yesterday, we heard about the now famous waffle toss that occurred in Toronto at the conclusion of the Leafs loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. Through all the mystery and mysticism that surrounds the incredible breakfast-themed protest in Toronto, we were left to wonder both who the tosser was and why in the world he thought throwing a waffle would be a good idea.

As it turns out, Sun Media was able to get in touch with the angry Leafs fan and find out what makes him tick. They were also able to find out why the Belgian treat made for good tossing and if he’ll strike again. As weird as this story is, if you can’t enjoy it I don’t know that we can be friends. Tamara Cherry from Sun Media breaks out the knife and fork to get to the bottom of things with Jack M., aka “Waffle Man.”

There were a few seconds left in another obviously lost Leafs game when the 27-year-old construction worker pulled out the soggy waffles he had stashed under his jersey and chucked them onto the ice of the Air Canada Centre on Thursday.

“They need to wake up and eat some breakfast,” Jack, who asked not to be identified, said in a Saturday interview, hours ahead of the Leafs meeting with Montreal. “I’m just trying to help them out with a balanced diet.”

The “diehard Leafs fan” said he didn’t throw the waffles out of disrespect to the players, explaining, “I love them, but somebody’s got to say something.”

Sending a message via Eggo waffles sure gets you noticed that’s for sure, especially in Toronto where media scrutiny of the Leafs is a daily event. As for Leafs players, like Colby Armstrong, were equal parts miffed and unamused with Jack’s protest.

“Who brings waffles to a hockey game, really?” Armstrong said. “Had we won the game, he was going home with soggy waffles so, I don’t know. Whatever. I don’t appreciate it really, a guy throwing waffles at me when I’m skating by.

“We’re trying to make light of it in here. Throw a T-bone. Spend some money. Throw a filet.”

With Leafs fans throwing stuff, given the ticket prices they have to pay to sit close enough to throw anything, asking for a T-bone isn’t that wild of a request. Still, the Leafs taking things as seriously as they have is a bit disappointing and it shows that their on-ice struggles are wearing on them a bit.

After all, if the fans are resorting to throwing waffles, you can’t get much lower. As for whether or not “Waffle Man” will be heard from again, the Leafs might want to keep some maple syrup handy on the bench.

“The Waffle Man will strike again, I can tell you that,” he said. “If they don’t shape up, yeah, he’s going to have to come back out.”

Rage on, Waffle Man.
