Mike Richards thinks P.K. Subban is too “cocky”

After the Flyers somewhat humbling loss to the Canadiens last night, Flyers captain Mike Richards decided to vent his frustrations over Habs young defenseman P.K. Subban. In the third period of last night’s game, the two got tangled up together and were about to start duking it out, but linesmen got between the two before any real punches were thrown. Richards had a few words to share about what he thought of Subban’s tenaciousness as CSN-Philly’s Tim Panaccio shares.

“He’s a guy that’s come in the league and hasn’t earned respect,” Richards told Team 990. “It’s just frustrating to see a young guy like that come in here and so much as think that he’s better than a lot of people.

“You have to earn respect in this league. It takes a lot. You can’t just come in here as a rookie and play like that. It’s not the way to get respect from other players around the league.

“Hopefully someone on their team addresses it, because, uh, I’m not saying I’m going to do it but something might happen to him of he continues to be that cocky.”

Frustration after a loss likely has a lot more to play into these words, but for the ever-pugnacious Flyers captain to get upset about another player perhaps being too “cocky” is starting to get to be a bit common these days. After all, Richards sounded off about the Penguins and Matt Cooke earlier this year saying they were divers. Richards himself had a feisty rookie season in the league wherein he got into five fights. Perhaps firing off about being too cocky is something he should be a bit more mindful of.

As for P.K. Subban, his response to what Richards had to say is that of equal parts surprise and swagger.

“I think that I’m confident but I think that there’s a lot of players that are confident in this league,” Subban said. “I’m not the only person that’s confident when I play the game.

“That’s what you have to do. Maybe the fact I’m a young guy coming in that maybe people don’t take well to that. As long as my teammates and the coaching staff are happy with what I’m doing, I’m going to continue to do that.”

To throw a little bit more fun on the fire, Arpon Basu tweets another fun quote from Subban that we’re sure will get blown out of proportion.

Asked Subban today if his spin-o-rama could be construed as cockiness. “Well, then Bobby Orr was the cockiest player in NHL history.”

Settle down guys, he’s not comparing himself to Bobby Orr. Besides, Bobby Orr could do whatever he damn well pleased on the ice as far as we’re concerned. If P.K. Subban can do spin-o-ramas and not cost his team turnovers and do it effectively... Let the opponents try and stop him. If Mike Richards decides he doesn’t care for it, we’re pretty sure he’ll find a way to make his opinions felt on the ice rather than off of it.
