The Pittsburgh Penguins opened their new digs (aka the Consol Energy Center) for real tonight, beginning their regular season schedule against cross-state rival the Philadelphia Flyers. (The Flyers are currently up 1-0 thanks to stellar goaltending by surprise starter Sergei Bobrovsky.)
While many will be dazzled by the new fangled technology throughout the new arena, some might look at the evening with a heavy heart as the team said goodbye to the Igloo aka Mellon Arena. Team owner/savior Mario Lemieux honored the memory of the old barn by pouring water that used to make up the ice at the Igloo at center ice in the Consol Energy Center.
That moment sort of feeling like a religious ceremony, doesn’t it?
