The Anaheim Ducks are now bating .500 with their aging, potentially-retiring players. While Scott Niedermayer decided to hang up his skates for good (well, allegedly … some people think he’ll “pull a Brett Favre”), Saku Koivu just signed a two-year, $5 million contract with the team.
While it’s good news for the team to retain a spirited playmaker such as Koivu, the natural question moves along to: will that be enough to convince his countryman, fellow teammate and potential retiree Teemu Selanne to come back for a little longer too? (Ducks fans are also beginning to wonder if it’s time to move the captaincy over to the high-character Finn.)
The two Finns are among their nation’s all-time leaders in points, so many people were excited by the concept of them being united on the Ducks’ second line. Injuries derailed their seasons to at least some extent, but it will be interesting to see them take another shot at it if Selanne decides to return.
