Ray Whitney, unable to reach a deal with the Carolina Hurricanes earlier this week, has signed a two-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes worth $6 million.
The Hurricanes had hoped the Whitney wouldn’t be able to get the deal he wanted on the open market he would return to Carolina, but with Whitney has to be more than happy with the getting $3 million a season from the Coyotes.
Considering just how many crazy contracts are being handed out today, you have to think that the Coyotes are thrilled to get Whitney at just $3 million a season. Whitney is still capable of 20-30 goals per year and 60+ points, which is a steal considering the money handed out to Manny Malhotra and Colby Armstrong.
It’s important to note that this is a 35+ contract, with Phoenix on the hook for the cap hit no matter what. Whitney also has a modified no-movement clause in the contract.
