The Edmonton Oilers’ future got a little bit brighter today now that the team announced they’ve signed their 2009 first round pick Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson to a three-year contract. Understandably so, Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini is excited about the Oilers future.

“This is an exciting day for the Oilers organization,” said Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini in a news release. “In signing his first NHL contract, Magnus has demonstrated through his junior and pro career with Team Sweden that he is an explosive player who exhibits great determination going to the net. We look forward to seeing him at his first NHL training camp this fall.”

Svensson is a 6'1" 210 pound winger and he was a standout star for Team Sweden at the 2010 IIHF World Championships in Germany making the tournament’s all star team at forward along with Pavel Datsyuk of the Red Wings and Evgeni Malkin of the Penguins. Not bad company to be in.

The Oilers are gearing up now to potentially be a really good team... In a few years. Along with Svensson, the Oilers will have Team Canada World Junior Championships phenom Jordan Eberle as well as either Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin from this year’s entry draft. That’s a first line that won’t suck at all, now if they can find a sucker someone to take Nikolai Khabibulin’s contract off their hands they’ll be in business.
