Long before I ever contemplated writing about hockey, I went to an Oklahoma City Blazers hockey game. It was a fantastic experience as the hockey was fun and violent (and the opposing team’s goalie gave us the finger! Hooray!). While I couldn’t imagine professional sports coming to that area, I left impressed by the veracity of the crowds. (Of course, a few years later, the city would get a test run with the NBA’s Hornets and now is home to the blandly named Thunder.)
So, naturally, when I hear anything about pucks in the unlikely land of Oklahoma I cannot help but smile. Derek Zona of Copper & Blue unearthed some logos (with help from Oilfield Hockey) of what will be the Edmonton Oilers new AHL affiliate: the Oklahoma City Barons.
High marks for: a) having a regionally appropriate mascot name, b) tying the team name into the Oilers themselves and c) generally making it all ultra-cool. Bravo. Here’s the logos Zona found from
