If you watched the first period against between the Penguins and the Habs, you probably came away thinking that Pittsburgh dominated and should have had a nice lead over the Canadiens.
Yet after 20 minutes, it’s tied 1-1 after Brian Gionta’s late period goal negated the strong play by the Penguins. Until that point, the Habs had been content to just dump and idly chase the puck on offense, while allowing the Penguins offense to have free reign while back on defense.
Yet despite what the eyes tell you happened on the ice, the first period stats tell a different story. The Habs outshot the Penguins 12-9, although the scoring chances were a bit more even.
Jaroslav Halak made 11 saves, although it still seemed as though he was suffering from the fatigue that plagued him in Game 1. Should be interesting to keep an eye on moving forward.
