The second period saw the Buffalo Sabres widen their lead to 3-0 while the decidedly flat Montreal Canadiens might see the middle frame as a missed opportunity. Buffalo’s Jason Pominville scored the only goal of the third period, but the Sabres hit a few posts and generally looked dominant against a punch-less Boston Bruins team. You can’t really blame Tuukka Rask for the disparity as Buffalo is obviously playing with a lot more urgency than the team they are trailing 3-1.
Speaking of urgency, the Habs seemed to be yawning their way through a second period in which they were given three powerplay opportunities to give themselves much-needed insurance against an explosive Capitals team. Instead, Alex Ovechkin scored the period’s lone goal and one must wonder how, exactly, could Montreal hold onto their flimsy lead?
Certainly not by playing the way they did in the second period, that’s for sure.
