Hockey Night in Canada’s Jeff Marek reports that Doug Weight will miss the rest of the season because of shoulder surgery. One has to wonder how much Weight has left in the tank. The American-born playmaker is 39-years-old and is scoring on less than a point-every-two-games pace. His scouting report shows that he already missed more than 25 games with an “upper body injury” which one assumes could very well be those shoulder problems.
At one point in his career, Weight put up some very impressive numbers. He scored a career high 104 points with the Edmonton Oilers during the 1995-96 season and also has 90 and 82 point seasons to his name. That being said, since playing some solid hockey during the Carolina Hurricanes’ surprising Cup run, Weight seems to be doing little more than collecting a paycheck. His last above average scoring season came when he managed 59 points in 2006-07 with the St. Louis Blues.
