Luongo: “Worst performance of my career”

Give Roberto Luongo credit for honesty. Anyone who witnessed his horrid first period -- and even the first ten minutes of the second period -- were convinced that he may not be in net when the team came out from the first intermission. The Canucks, in a big game against Colorado, were quickly down 3-0 when Luongo allowed three goals on ten shots in the first 20 minutes.

“That’s probably the worst I’ve ever played in my career,” he said before rebounding to help backstop a dramatic 6-4 third-period comeback victory over the Colorado Avalanche to keep the club atop the Northwest Division. “It was pretty bad, but I’m pretty happy with myself and I battled back and stayed with it. I could have put my head down and not come out in the second, but I came back and made some saves and the guys scored some big goals. At the end of the day, I’m disappointed but happy with myself in the way I battled back.”

The Canucks quickly scored in the second period but found themselves down 4-1, before rattling off five unanswered goals for a dramatic win.

Luongo claims this was his worst performance of his career, yet he’s had a couple of shaky games since the Olympics already. I don’t even think that’s his worst performance of the season; the five goals on 19 shots in October was pretty bad. How about allowing seven goals in an elimination game in the playoffs last year?

But as far what’s happened the past few games? I blame the extra workload he took on during the Olympics, since that’s just the easy way out.
