Semyon Varlamov Back With Washington Capitals

So much for some goaltender zaniness in Washington. Of course, there’s still some time left for the right deal to come along.

For now though, it appears the Capitals are set in goal after calling up Semyon Varlamov and sending Michal Neuvirth down to the Hershey Bears, according to Washington Post beat writer Tarik El-Bashir:

Michal Neuvirth has been sent down. So the Caps’ goalies are Semyon Varlamov and Jose Theodore.

There was some brief thought this morning that a trade could be in the works after Varlamov was called up, but this was just a case of the Russian goaltender getting a game in Hershey before NHL action resumed. Varlamov had missed nearly two months due to injury, and his one game back before the Olympic break he allowed six goals; not exactly the way you’d like to get back on track.

Varlamov was solid in last night’s win for the Hershey Bears, stopping 30-of-32. After the way Bruce Boudreau blasted him after the February 11th loss, it should be interesting to see how they handle his playing time down the stretch.
