While there was just one game last night, a 5-4 barn burner of a win for the Coyotes over the Ducks, one thing you don’t expect in those kinds of games is one of the best saves you’ll see this season. The other part of that is that you probably wouldn’t expect it to come from Phoenix’s Mike Smith.
Seeing is believing though, and Smith made one of the best saves of the season in stuffing America’s favorite Duck, Bobby Ryan.
So much for thinking Marc-Andre Fleury would get off to a slow start again this season. His acrobatics in making stops against the Panthers in last night’s 4-2 Penguins win are the sorts of things you’d expect out of a superstar goalie. Good thing for the Penguins that’s just what Fleury is.
Late in the first period with the Penguins leading 1-0, Fleury went sprawling on the ice fighting through bodies before robbing Florida’s Stephen Weiss of what seemed like a money goal. Versus’ Dave Strader and Brian Engblom have the call on this early-season candidate for save of the year.

Aside from the occasional night off – or the even less common instance when a save or goal isn’t deemed worthy – the gang at PHT will decide which tally or stop is the best of any given night. Once those two winners are determined, we’ll share our reasoning (and most importantly, the video clip for each) in posts for your viewing pleasure.
Being forced into duty, Islanders goalie Mikko Koskinen sure wasn’t being counted on to do incredible things in goal for New York. After all, he was the sixth goalie the Islanders have had to turn to this season and for all intents and purposes he should be doing all his on-the-job training in the AHL right now.
Instead, he’s getting to start in Montreal against the Canadiens and he’s helping the Islanders win in the shootout while making one of the sickest saves we’ve seen all season long. James Wisniewski was made out to be the victim on this acrobatic diving stop by the Finnish rookie. If we haven’t had a save of the year candidate yet this year, I think we’ve got a front-runner now.
