Debate gets … heated between Milbury, Roenick

No doubt about it, Eric Nystrom’s hit on Kris Letang is likely starting a ton of heated debates in Dallas, Pittsburgh and plenty of other hockey circles.

If you were looking for a passionate exchange of ideas following the game, you didn’t have to consult a trusty message board or your local tavern, though. NBC Sports Network analysts Jeremy Roenick and Mike Milbury weren’t shy about disagreeing on the subject, as you can see in the video below.

Following the Capitals’ 5-2 defeat in Ottawa last night — their third loss in a row — NHL on NBC analysts Mike Milbury and Jeremy Roenick performed an autopsy on a lifeless Washington squad.

Milbury’s point about Hunter’s lack of NHL coaching experience is a good one. Hunter’s gone with the blunt, no-nonsense approach right from the get-go, a style that served him well at the junior level but is far more difficult to pull off in the NHL.

This isn’t to say the hard-line approach can’t work in the NHL — coaches like John Tortorella and the Sutters have used it to great effect — but Hunter has nowhere near the resume as those guys.

Simply put, it’s fair to suggest Hunter hasn’t picked his spots well. He’s publicly criticized/benched Washington’s three most veteran players — Mike Knuble, Roman Hamrlik and Tomas Vokoun — which has coincided with the Caps falling into complete disarray. Those are pretty big battles for a rookie bench boss with 38 games of head coaching experience, especially dealing with a team of *ahem* strong personalities.

The NHL’s overall rules haven’t been assailed like they were in the Dead Puck Era, but there are still things that give hockey people fits. Delay of game penalties are the first example that come to mind, but a perceived hypersensitivity to slashing infractions also bother plenty of people.

Mike Milbury is in that group, as you can see in a very amusing way in the video clip below:

Keith Jones and Mike Milbury went in-depth on the wisdom of trading the likes of Rick Nash, Zach Parise and Ryan Suter today. Perhaps the most interesting discussion is at the end, as the two debate the merits of the New York Islanders moving Evgeni Nabokov:

Milbury: Rick Nash could be a “perfect fit” for Rangers

The New York Rangers made something of a statement by shutting out the Boston Bruins last night, but it was almost all Henrik Lundqvist, who made 42 saves. To some, the hard-working team needs more talent to justify its place atop the Eastern Conference standings.

The team has been linked to Rick Nash quite a bit lately, so Keith Jones and Mike Milbury tackled the subject yesterday, with mixed reactions.
