Trade: Philly sends Zolnierczyk to Anaheim for Rosehill

The Anaheim Ducks have acquired forward Harry Zolnierczyk from Philadelphia in exchange for pugilist Jay Rosehill, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

Zolnierczyk, 25, has spent the last two seasons shuttling between Philly and its AHL affiliate in Adirondack. He played in 37 games for the Flyers during the 2011-12 season, scoring 3G-3A-6PTS.

This season, the former Brown University product appeared in seven games, making a name for himself with a series of controversial hits.

The most recent one came in early March, when he was suspended four games for charging Senators forward Mike Lundin. (Pictured)

Rosehill, 27, signed a one-year deal with the Ducks in early January, but has spent the entire season playing with AHL Norfolk. He’s actually been somewhat productive with the Admirals, scoring 4G-4A-8PTS in 33 games while racking up 90 PIM.

Rosehill last appeared in the NHL during the 2011-12 campaign, appearing in 31 games for Toronto. He failed to score a point but did register 60 penalty minutes and a minus-four rating.

So, what does this deal mean for each team?

Zolnierczyk’s aggressive ways will add to a Ducks team loaded with size: David Steckel (6-foot-6, 215 pounds) Bryan Allen (6-foot-5, 226 pounds), Sheldon Souray (6-foot-4, 233 pounds) Patrick Maroon (6-4, 225) and Brad Staubitz (30 fights over the last two seasons).

Of course, Harry Z will have to make the Ducks first. He’s reportedly off to Norfolk to start.

Rosehill could squeeze into the Flyers lineup given the injuries to forwards Danny Briere, Max Talbot and Jody Shelley, though it seems like the AHL is a more likely landing spot.

Flyers injury update: Coburn has separated shoulder, surgery of Meszaros

The bad news continues to pile up for the Philadelphia Flyers.

The team updates that Braydon Coburn’s upper-body injury from Thursday is actually a separated shoulder, leaving him out indefinitely. It’s unusual for Coburn to deal with such an issue; he’s only missed eight games since 2007.

If that wasn’t enough, fellow defenseman Andrej Meszaros will have season-ending shoulder surgery on April 2. He’s been limited by that issue in 2013 and finally decided to go under the knife.

In other injury news, there’s nothing positive to update about other banged-up Flyers Nicklas Grossmann and Danny Briere.

It seems more and more like this is a lost season for Philly.

Rookie call-up McGinn to skate on Flyers’ top line

Tye McGinn

With Danny Briere out indefinitely with a concussion, the Flyers have called up 22-year-old forward Tye McGinn from AHL Adirondack.

McGinn’s promotion isn’t just to the NHL either. It’s all the way to the top line, where he’ll skate tonight against the Rangers with Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek.

Granted, McGinn has had the assignment before.

“I was lucky enough to get [three] games on the top line my last stint here,” said McGinn, per CSNPhilly.com. “They’re great players. They help me out a lot. Just go out and play my game.

“I played a few games this season already with the Flyers and that definitely helps out with the confidence. Just trying to jump back where I left off.”

The Flyers will be hoping it’s a combination that works, given they’re in desperate need of a win. A regulation loss would drop them seven points back of a playoff spot and would leave them just 16 games to make up the difference.

Briere out indefinitely with concussion

Danny Briere

Flyers forward Danny Briere is out indefinitely with a concussion, the club announced today.

Briere reportedly suffered the injury Saturday when he crashed into the boards during practice. The 35-year-old missed Sunday’s 2-1 overtime loss to Pittsburgh.

For the Flyers, it’s more bad news in a season that appears likely to finish without a playoff appearance. With 17 games remaining, Philadelphia is five points back of the eighth-place Rangers in the Eastern Conference.

Briere has five goals and eight assists in 26 games.

The injury should also end the trade speculation that’s surrounded the veteran forward as the April 3 deadline approaches. Briere is signed through 2014-15 with a cap hit of $6.5 million; however, his salary dips to $3 million and $2 million for next season and the one after that, respectively.

The Flyers also announced that defenseman Nicklas Grossmann is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Philadelphia hosts the Rangers Tuesday.

Briere day-to-day with upper body injury, out tonight vs. Pittsburgh

Danny Briere

The Flyers are going to be a bit shorthanded when they face their cross-state rivals in Pittsburgh tonight.

Philly GM Paul Holmgren said Danny Briere is day-to-day with an upper body injury suffered yesterday in practice and will be out of tonight’s game. Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post says it’s likely Harry Zolnierczyk will draw into the lineup to replace him. Mike Knuble is also a possibility.

Briere has battled injury problems over the last few years, but he’s missed just four games this season for the Flyers. That said, his production is down with just five goals and eight assists this season. His 13 points put him 18 behind team leader Jakub Voracek. With the Flyers pushing to make the playoffs, losing anyone producing points is an unnecessary blow.
