Wounded Wizard: Mats Zuccarello out with broken wrist

Tough news for a player with a spell-binding nickname: “Midget Wizard” Mats Zuccarello will be sidelined indefinitely with a broken wrist, according to Katie Strang.

Considering the scant amount of regular season games remaining, it’s probably safe to say that the New York Rangers won’t get him back until at least the playoffs. In fact, it wouldn’t be shocking if this is his last 2011-12 appearance.

With today’s game marking just his 10th game of the season, it’s hard to call this a major loss; he’s an undersized forward whose limitations might have been exposed in the grinding intensity of a playoff series. Still, he was starting to put his game together a bit; Zuccarello had two goals in two games on March 17 and 19.

Losing him won’t make or break the Rangers, but you never know when you might need a little wizard’s magic.

Flames will be without Curtis Glencross for at least six weeks

The Calgary Flames are currently on the Western Conference playoff bubble, but they’ll need to scratch and claw to stay in the mix without their third highest scorer until March.

Curtis Glencross’ MCL injury will keep him out at least six weeks, according to Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald.

The winger has 33 points in 45 games, ranking him behind Olli Jokinen (36) and Jarome Iginla (38) for Calgary’s team lead. Glencross is also tied with Iginla for first place among Flames with 18 goals, a mark he reached by connecting on 24 percent of his shots.

On a personal note, losing Glencross also leaves a gaping void in the cringe-inducing pun nickname department, as there’s really only one “Glengarry Glencross.”
