This edition of the Flyers will be remembered for being too ‘inconsistent’

Last night’s 4-3 loss to the New York Rangers officially knocked the Philadelphia Flyers out of post-season contention.

It’s been a weird year for the Flyers. They had some great moments, including a 10-game winning streak earlier in the season, and they were also remarkably inconsistent.

That long winning streak began on Nov. 27 with a 5-3 win against the Calgary Flames. During that run, they also defeated Boston, Ottawa, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, Edmonton, Dallas, Detroit and Colorado. As you can see, six of the 10 wins came against teams currently in a playoff spot.

So, what went wrong?

Well, once the streak ended against Dallas on Dec. 17, Philadelphia only managed to win one of its next eight contests, which obviously isn’t good enough. From the night they lost in Dallas to the middle of the following month, the Flyers went 3-8-3 and only one of those victories came in regulation time (the other two were decided in a shootout).

“Any team can look back and say coulda, woulda, shoulda,” forward Brayden Schenn said after the loss to the Rangers, per the Courier-Post. “Things happen throughout 82 games in a season. We’ve just been, as a team we’ve been inconsistent. This league if you win one, lose one or can’t put a streak together you’re not gonna make up any ground. That’s what happened from kind of December on.”

It’s not all doom and gloom for them though. At the least the future appears to be bright. The Flyers have one of the best groups of young defensemen coming through their system. They also have Shayne Gostisbehere and Ivan Provorov who are already with the big club.

They’re also armed with up to 12 picks in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, including two third-rounders, three fourth-rounders and up to three seventh-rounders (one of them is a conditional pick they got from New Jersey).

With an abundance of young defense prospects and draft picks, the Flyers can definitely pull off a trade or two to make themselves better going into 2017-18.
