Flyers’ Neuvirth hospitalized for ‘precautionary reasons’ after collapsing on the ice

Philadelphia Flyers goalie Michal Neuvirth will remain in hospital overnight after collapsing on the ice Saturday.

The situation occurred in the first period, just before a faceoff. Neuvirth was standing in his crease when he suddenly fell over and was eventually taken off the ice on a stretcher.

The club later stated he was awake and alert, however it’s not yet known what caused him to collapse.

“I don’t want to speculate -- he’s had a little bit of a chest cold, there’s been a few things going around, there has been all winter,” said Flyers GM Ron Hextall, per CSN Philly.

“We sent him over to the hospital for precautionary reasons, everything so far has been good, things are positive.”

The Flyers, already without Steve Mason due to illness, defeated the New Jersey Devils by a score of 3-0 in a game that turned chippy at times.

Anthony Stolarz, who was recalled from the AHL on an emergency basis, stopped all 26 shots he faced.

From the Courier-Post:

The Flyers didn’t think Neuvirth, who had a chest cold, was in any danger before the game, but they had Semborski come in just in case Stolarz couldn’t make it to the game in time. Somehow he got from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Philadelphia in an hour and 55 minutes.

He missed warmups, but was on the bench 20 seconds after the opening faceoff.

That brings us to Eric Semborski, a graduate of Temple University who was an emergency goalie for the Flyers on Saturday.

With 24 seconds remaining in the game, Flyers coach Dave Hakstol actually sent Semborski onto the ice to finish the game, however, based on reports, because of his emergency goalie status, officials wouldn’t allow it because there was no injury to Stolarz.
