The Washington Capitals will be without defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk for the next two games after he was suspended by the NHL on Sunday afternoon.

Shattenkirk had a hearing on Sunday morning for a charging incident that happened late in the third period of their 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night.

On the play Shattenkirk hit Kings rookie defenseman Kevin Gravel behind the net, leaving his feet to launch into him.

On Sunday afternoon the NHL’s department of player safety announced that Shattenkirk will sit for two games. He will miss the Capitals’ game on Sunday night in Anaheim against the Ducks and their game home game on Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild.

Here is another look at the play, as well as the NHL’s explanation for the suspension.

The two-game suspension will cost Shattenkirk $47,222.22 in salary.

He will be eligible to return to the lineup on Thursday night against the Nashville Predators.
