Knight explains why she never gave up on her Olympic dream and how her mom's encouragement made a world of difference.

Hilary Knight, a professional hockey player for the Boston Pride of the NWHL and a two-time silver medalist at the Winter Olympics, is one of several athletes to be featured in TOMBOY, an hourlong documentary project that is looking elevate the conversation regarding gender in sports.

The documentary will premiere in this month and will air across the NBC regional networks, NBCSN and select NBC-owned stations.

Along with Knight, the documentary will also include skier Lindsey Vonn and basketball player Ann Meyers-Drysdale.

Featured above is a clip from Knight talking about her dream to become a hockey player since age 5.

“I was five years old and my grandma asked what do you want to be when you grow up. I told her I want to be a hockey player. She said, ‘oh girls don’t play hockey.’ Luckily at the time I had my mom, she is a very strong role model and female athlete in my life, and she said ‘mom get with the times, they play hockey, Hilary is going to play hockey.’ So since age 5 I have been working toward an Olympic dream and 15 years later I ended up at my first Olympic games in Vancouver in 2010.”

Knight won silver medals with the United States women’s team at the 2010 and 2014 games and is a six-time gold medalist at the World Championships.
