When the New Jersey Devils made Kyle Quincey a healthy scratch on Tuesday night it was pretty obvious that a trade was coming.

On Wednesday, the trade happened.

That is when the Devils sent Quincey to the Columbus Blue Jackets less than an hour before the NHL trade deadline in exchange for defenseman Dalton Prout according to TSN’s Darren Dreger and the Columbus Dispatch‘s Aaron Portzline.

Quincey brings a lot of experience and a relatively cheap contract to the Blue Jackets for the remainder of the season and playoffs and adds some depth to their blue line. He has 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 53 games for the Devils this season while playing close to 19 minutes per night. With Seth Jones, David Savard, Zach Werenski and Jack Johnson logging the biggest minutes on the Blue Jackets’ defense this season they are not going to need Quincey to be a total game-changer, but just somebody that can give them a little bit of depth on the back end.

Prout, 26, seemed to have fallen out of favor with the Blue Jackets this season and fell far down their depth chart, playing in just 15 games with the big club this season. Given his age, tough season, and contract situation (signed for one more year at $1.575 million) it is, to say the least, an interesting return for the Devils because it’s not usually the type of player you see a seller acquiring at this time of year. Prout is 26, is probably as good as he is going to be, and is signed for one more year at $1.575 million per season.
