Shane Doan still hasn’t asked the Coyotes for a trade

Shane Doan has spent the past two decades playing for the Arizona Coyotes, and with the NHL trade deadline fast approaching and the Coyotes clearly in a position to sell it is worth wondering if his time with the only organization he has ever known could be coming to an end.

Given the Coyotes’ position in the standings and the fact the 40-year-old Doan has never played in a Stanley Cup Final his name has been mentioned in trade speculation for much of the season. But to this point the veteran has yet to ask general manager John Chayka for a trade, something the Coyotes’ GM mentioned again on Friday to Dan Rosen of NHL.com.

“To date we’ve talked quite a bit and I’ve left it that if he has a belief that it might be in the best interest for himself and his family to try and take a run at the Stanley Cup I’m open to having that discussion with him,” Chayka said. “I wouldn’t be fair to Shane to not have that discussion. I respect him too much to not have it. Having said that, he hasn’t told me to explore these opportunities and look into things. He’s happy with being a Coyote. He signed here for a reason. He’s only played here ever. That’s where we’re at today.”

Chayka added that as of Friday Doan had yet to tell him a trade is something he is looking to explore.

Originally drafted by the franchise when it was still based in Winnipeg in 1995, Doan has played all 1,522 games of his NHL career with the Jets/Coyotes organization, scoring 401 goals and adding 563 assists.

To this point the closest he has come to a Stanley Cup was during the 2011-12 season when the Coyotes -- somewhat shockingly -- made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals only to be eliminated by the eventual cup Champion Los Angeles Kings in five games. That is the only time he has made it out of the first round in his career.

But with his career obviously starting to wind down, and the Coyotes sitting in 29th place in the NHL standings and pretty much completely out of the playoff race, it makes sense that a trade would be something that both sides might be willing to explore. The biggest question though is whether Doan, who has a no-trade clause in his contract and can dictate where he ends, will actually want to do move to get what could be his last shot at a Stanley Cup.

If he does end up moving it would probably only be for a depth role on a contender and not exactly as a top-liner.

Even though he has appeared in every game this season for the Coyotes but has seen his production and ice-time all take a noticeable decline even from where it was a year ago. With only five goals and 14 assists he is currently on pace for his lowest offensive output since the 1998-99 season when he was still only 22 years old.
