‘That hurts’ -- Stars let a three-goal lead slip away in loss to Predators

A win over Nashville on Sunday would’ve put the Dallas Stars within four points of the final wild card spot in the Western Conference.

They had a good start, opening up a two-goal lead on the Predators in the first period and extending that lead to three goals by the second period. And then it fell apart for Dallas, which conceded five unanswered goals and ended up losing 5-3 -- a disheartening defeat as the Stars looked to move up in the playoff hunt.

Sports Club Stats is now giving Dallas only a 2.5 per cent chance of qualifying for the post-season.

“You go into a third period with a 3-1 lead with your lives on the line, and that’s the effort and the result that we get? It’s unacceptable,” said Jamie Benn, per the Dallas Morning News.

“We’re fighting for our lives, and that’s what we put out there for 20 minutes.”

The Stars’ power play converted on three of nine chances -- their much maligned penalty kill gave up one goal on five Nashville power plays -- but Dallas also gave up a short-handed goal to Filip Forsberg that turned out to be the winner. Within just six minutes and two seconds, Dallas went from a two-goal lead at the beginning of the third period to a one-goal deficit that it would never recover from.

“That one really stings. That’s a tough one where I thought our power play was going really well and did a lot of good things,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff.

“That hurts.”
