High-scoring Wild light up the Red Wings

Zach Parise scored twice while Devan Dubnyk recorded 30 saves as the West-leading Wild downed the Red Wings, 6-3.

Every time the Detroit Red Wings inched closer, the high-scoring Minnesota Wild once again pulled away.

For the Red Wings, this loss represents another blow to their playoff hopes, as they are in serious danger of seeing their streak of post-season appearances end at 25 consecutive years. Among the top-five teams in overall scoring, the Wild continued to pile up the goals in a 6-3 win, this time making a long afternoon for goalie Jared Coreau.

The Wild established two-goal leads four different times, with the Red Wings closing that gap on three occasions. But they couldn’t get the equalizer. More accurately, they couldn’t stop Minnesota’s potent offensive attack.

Helping matters -- or hurting them, depending on your perspective -- was the fact Minnesota’s power play scored three times on just four chances.

Last week, the terrific season of Mikael Granlund was discussed at PHT. At the age of 24, he’s going to shatter his previous career bests for goals and points in a single season. Well, you can make that same point for Charlie Coyle under Bruce Boudreau.

He entered today’s game with 42 points, which equals his previous career best accomplished over 82 games last season. This season? He needed only 54 games to hit that same point total. He has now established a new individual standard. On Sunday, he registered two more points, including Minnesota’s third goal of the afternoon.

But the big story from this game occurred in the first period. Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist was given only a double minor for a vicious high-stick on Jared Spurgeon. Nyquist could be facing further discipline from the league’s Department of Player Safety.
