PHT Morning Skate: Flames give nine-year-old fan a day he’ll never forget

--Last Friday, the NHL unveiled their list of the 100 greatest players in league history. Only a few current NHLers made the list, but if another list was to be made in 100 years from now, which active players could find themselves on that edition? Patrik Laine, Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews would all be great guesses. “I think that’s everybody’s goal, to be remembered,” Laine said. “If we can play the game the same way, then someone will remember you when you’re not playing anymore. That would be pretty cool to be selected like that someday. I will try to [work toward] that every day.” (NHL.com)

--Young Minnesota Wild fan, Owen Guertin, was recently diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation. Owen’s father was in Los Angeles for All-Star weekend, and he managed to get a few Wild players to help bring joy to his son’s life. Devan Dubnyk recorded a pep talk video for Owen, Mikko Koivu sent him a hockey stick and assistant coach Darby Hendrickson passed along plenty of gifts too. (Minneapolis StarTribune)

--Here’s another great father/son story. Duncan Keith’s All-Star weekend was extra special because he got to bring son, Colton, around everywhere he went. Colton followed his dad to the NHL 100 ceremony, media day and he even sat on the bench during the skills competition. “It’s cool for me, but for me the fun part now is to be able to give him these types of experiences. It’s added incentive to try to make these games and give him that experience of being here and being around the room and meeting different players and seeing what it’s all about.” (Chicago Tribune)

--Sports Illustrated counts down the 17 greatest moments in NHL history. The top moment is Bobby Orr’s iconic goal against the St. Louis Blues, while number two is the blockbuster deal that saw Wayne Gretzky go from Edmonton to Los Angeles. It’s a pretty fascinating list. (Sports Illustrated)

--The Calgary Flames signed nine-year-old Fionn Daly to a one-day contract as part of the Make A Wish Foundation. Daly got his own press conference, he got to sign the contract, practice with the team and hang out in the locker room. What a feel-good story. (BarDown)

--The AHL All-Star game went down last night and the league decided to honor Craig Cunningham by having each player wear his no. 14 during the pre-game warmup. As you may remember, Cunningham collapsed on the ice back in November. “It’s a classy move by the AHL,” Cunningham’s teammate Christian Fischer said. “Craig probably saw it on social media, he’s probably smiling. It’s a pretty nice tribute from the whole league, I think.” (Associated Press)
