Patrick Maroon scores hat trick, drops gloves with Zdeno Chara

Edmonton Oilers forward Patrick Maroon had a night to remember against the Boston Bruins on Thursday.

Playing on a line with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl certainly seemed to agree with Maroon, as he helped lead his team to a 4-3 road win by scoring his first career hat trick.

“This is cool. This is pretty special for me,” Maroon said, per NHL.com. “I don’t think in 1,000 years I’d ever imagine me getting a hat trick in the NHL.”

He managed to find the back of the net in each period, including this slick move to complete the hat trick in the third frame:

As if scoring three of his team’s four goals wasn’t enough, Maroon also (sort of) dropped the gloves with Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara (top).

It seems pretty clear from the beginning that he wasn’t going to throw any punches, but he didn’t want to take any either. But with the Bruins in possession of the puck deep in Oilers territory, it was one way to get the referees to blow the whistle.

When it was all said and done, he finished the game with the three goals, a plus-3 rating, five penalty minutes, five shots on goal and one hit in 17:00 of ice time.

Oh and by the way, Maroon’s up to 14 goals on the season.
