After a scoreless first period at the NHL’s Centennial Classic in Toronto on Sunday afternoon the Detroit Red Wings were able to strike first just a couple of minutes into the second period.
It was rookie forward Anthony Mantha, the team’s first-round draft pick in 2013, getting the goal when he beat Maple Leafs goalie Frederick Andersen with an absolute laser of a shot that from the top of the faceoff circle.
Mantha has been a bright spot for the Red Wings this season -- and especially recently -- entering play on Sunday with 13 points in 21 games (that is a 50-point pace over 82 games for a 22-year-old). This goal was his eighth of the season and his fourth in the past five games.
The goal also extends his current point streak to six consecutive games.
