Flyers goalie Steve Mason leaves game with apparent hand injury

Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason had to exit their game against the San Jose Sharks on Friday night after the first period due to what appeared to be a left hand injury.

The Flyers offered no official word on what the injury was, but it appeared to happen with just under four minutes to play in the period with the Sharks on the power play.

It was kind of a bizarre play that involved Sharks forward Joe Thornton bumping into Mason’s stick just as a shot from the point was being directed at the Flyers net. As the collision with Thornton disrupted Mason’s arm, the puck appeared to hit Mason inside his blocker pad. Mason appeared to be in discomfort following the play and received attention from the Flyers’ training staff but remained in the game to finish the period.

You can see the play in the video above.

It is not yet known whether it was the collision with Thornton or the puck that forced Mason from the game.

Just seconds after that play Patrick Marleau scored to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead.

Mason was replaced by Anthony Stolarz to start the second period.

In 30 games this season Mason has a .905 save percentage on the season, though his numbers have been steadily improving over the past two months after a miserable start to the season in October.
