--The New York Times took a deeper look at the NHL’s new concussion spotters and how the entire process works. “Our goal every year is to evaluate the system we have in place and, to the extent it can be improved, to make the changes necessary to improve it. The changes we have made to our program and protocol from year to year, and there have been changes made every year, are a reflection of that process and philosophy,” said deputy commissioner Bill Daly. --The NHL is being taken over by the young guns around the league. Players like Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine are dominating at a young age, but you may be surprised to find out that younger players dominating in hockey is nothing new. --Speaking of a youth movement, the Rangers have improved significantly this season because of the contributions they’ve received from the young players on their roster. Guys like Jimmy Vesey, Pavel Buchnevich and Brady Skjei have made all the difference. (Sports Illustrated)

--The first NHL games in history occurred on this day 99 years ago. Joe Malone’s five goals led the Montreal Canadiens to a 7-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators, and the Montreal Wanderers beat the Toronto Arena’s 10-9 (I guess large goalie equipment wasn’t a problem back then). (NHL.com)

--The Carolina Hurricanes play “Secret Santa” and some of the guys feel like Cam Ward needs to update his wardrobe, while some others believe that sophomore defenseman Noah Hanifin still needs a babysitter. (Sportsnet)
